The Poem Between Light and Dark: Equinox as Poetic Practice

At the autumnal equinox, the light and dark meet in balance. One season reaches its edge, and another begins its slow turning inward.

In this generative poetry workshop, we will explore the equinox as a poetic practice: a way of writing through thresholds, release, and return. As autumn begins, the equinox invites us to pause and notice what has been growing in us, what is ready to be gathered or let go, and what kind of darkness the poem might help us enter with care.

Together, we will read poems by writers such as Ross Gay, Marie Howe, and Natalie Diaz, paying attention to how poems hold change, memory, uncertainty, grief, wonder, and renewal. Through guided writing exercises, participants will generate new work and consider how the page can become a place of turning, toward the light and toward the dark. Writers of all levels are welcome.
